They know it perfectly well here at Saturnia in the heart of the Tuscan Maremma where, in addition to the renowned massages and spa treatments offered by the resort, you can play golf at 300 meters above sea level, surrounded by the beauty of the panorama with Mount Amiata as background. This is a destination to enjoy year – round but even more so in autumn and spring when at the end of a match, a soak in the warm spa waters almost miraculously relieves physical and sports fatigue. Created from the drafting pencil of Californian architect Ronald Fream of the Studio Golf Plan in 2007, the championship course extends over 70 undulating hectares where maximum attention was paid to nature as well as water and energy conservation. Each hole has its own identity and special character. You can never afford to lose your concentration amidst the ponds, brooks and large bunkers carved out of the fairways and undulating ample greens – but it could happen, especially if you find a roe-deer, porcupine, pheasant or hare as a playmate, not an unlikely event on this course in the countryside. If you play it from the furthest tees, it becomes long and difficult, suitable only for those with unlimited power!!! But from the yellow tees, it can be within the reach of many players with fun guaranteed. A few very important tips: Hole 2: a steeply sloping green from right to left. Try to arrange it so you have an uphill putt. Hole 5: par 5 with a double dogleg: exercise caution, gambling does not pay off here; a good tee shot on the right side, then a lay-up so you will have more room for your shot to the green. Hole 14: par three with a frontal water obstacle featuring large white boulders set into the knoll in the background; truly spectacular. Hole 18 Par 4: you can see the entire surrounding area from the raised tee (the valley of the Terme di Saturnia – the hots springs of Saturnia), water on the right side for the entire length of the hole, split-level green: be careful because the entire hole slants toward the lake on the right.
