It was 1889 when the British colony in Florence founded Florence Golf Club, the very first golf organization in Italy. The golf course, which used to be located in the Cascine Park, was moved immediately after the First World War to the area of the airport of Florence and later moved again to the current location, on the Via Chiantigiana, 13 Km South of the Tuscan capital city. L'Ugolino was established in 1934, designed by English architects Cecil Blandford and Peter Gannon, who built a par 69 course; in the Sixties the course was extended to par 72 by the Italian engineer Piero Mancinelli. The clubhouse's and the swimming-pool's projects were committed to Gherardo Bosio, who managed to design a facility that is still nowadays perfectly functional. It represents one of the finest examples of rationalist architecture and is under protection of the Italian Fine Arts Department. The Florentine club is an essential and integral part of the history of Italian golf, the most evocative memory being the 1983 Italian Open, won by Bernhard Langer after a thrilling play-off against Severiano Ballesteros and Ken Brown at the end of a match in which even Greg Norman, Mark James, Costantino Rocca, Baldovino Dassù and many other stars of the European Tour took part. Rather hilly and not overly long, this old course of outstanding views demands a special attention to precision. The small greens, often elevated and well guarded by bunkers, are the real challenge here.

Point of view of PGA Pro Giorgio Merletti:

As you enter the Golf Club Ugolino, you enter history. In Florence golf started in 1889, in a club established by the British expats and located North of the town. The current golf club was inaugurated in 1934 and was designed following the gentle slopes of the Chianti Hills. Playing the first three holes, you immediately get the idea: sloping fairways, very small and very well hidden greens, many significant gradients. Those are the traits that make the 18 holes of the Golf club Ugolino a pleasure: it's unique and extremely entertaining.
